Roderick (Rod) studied agricultural science at Melbourne University, then did a PhD in biochemistry working on growth hormone in pigs. He spent much of his career as a scientist with the Victorian government. Before joining the NRL in 1999, Roderick combined the roles of Quality Manager and research scientist at the Victorian Institute of Animal Science. He has published numerous scientific papers, and his research interests have included the development and evaluation of diagnostic tests as well as the study of leptospirosis in animals and people. Roderick is responsible for the maintenance and improvement of the NRL's quality management system. He has met the international training requirements for auditors of quality management systems, and is both an elected member of the NATA Council and a member of NATA's Proficiency Testing Scheme Providers Accreditation Advisory Committee. He is happy to deal with questions regarding quality management systems, international quality management standards, GMP or laboratory accreditation. Roderick is a member of the NRL's Management Team, and plays a general scientific support role within the NRL. He coordinates an international proficiency testing scheme for leptospirosis testing, manages NRL activities relating to leptospirosis, and is President Elect of the International Leptospirosis Society.

Roderick enjoys living in semi-rural seclusion at Hurstbridge and encouraging his sons with their musical and theatrical activities. His leisure activities include amateur theatre (as actor or director) and genealogical research.
