Wayne graduated as B. App. Sc. ( Med. Lab. Science ) from R.M.I.T in 1982 and undertook the Fellowship of the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists majoring in Microbiology in 1990. More recently he has completed an MBA through LaTrobe University. Wayne has had over 20 years of clinical microbiology experience. He has worked in large private pathology laboratories including Dorevitch Pathology and Gribbles Pathology and in the public sector at the Royal Melbourne Hospital predominantly in Microbiology Departments where he has specialised in infectious disease serology. In his most recent position he was 2nd-in-charge of Microbiology and also responsible for the serology section including veterinary serology and molecular biology. Other professional activities include being Convenor of the State Serology SIG, Secretary for the National Serology SIG, Examiner of the AIMS Fellowship program, Editor of the AIMS Australian Journal of Medical Laboratory Science, AIMS National Continuing Education Committee member and a long-standing NATA assessor. He has completed over twenty scientific publications and numerous oral presentations. Wayne joined the NRL in January 2001, to manage a project for the Diagnostics and Technology Branch of the Department of Health and Aged Care. The aim of this project is to generalise the use of the NRL Quality Assurance systems by making them more closely linked with quality improvements in diagnostic laboratories. From this project some significant international collaborations have arisen.

Wayne tries to spend as much of his spare time as possible with his wife and 3 children. He enjoys trying to stay fit by running and exercise which is in constant conflict with his love of good food.
