6th Annual Nossal Global Health Forum 2010 (The Millennium Development Goals 2000 - 2015)

This one day forum folows the 63rd United Nations Annual Department of Public Information (DPI) / Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) Conference held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre entitled "Advance Global Health: Achieve the MDGs". International Conference on Opportunistic Pathogens in AIDS (ICOPA)

Since the original description of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in1981 and the establishment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as its etiological agent in 1983, this infection is now recognized world wide. Almost every country has suffered from this pandemic in many ways. The disease not only dwarfed all other medical conditions, but also has been the greatest social enigma and has shown its impact on the global economy. The discovery of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has been a boon to the HIV infected persons, but this has posed a major challenge to health workers. Due to HAART many more HIV infected persons are living longer, but most of these infected can not afford it for life long. In view of this, several nations including India have started providing free ART. Whether or not on HAART, the life time risk of contracting opportunistic infections (OI) is extremely high. Also concerns of resistance to anti-retroviral drugs have become important. Recently several breakthroughs have occurred in the field of HIV such as co-pathogens of HIV, receptor attachment, neuropathology, tissue tropism, testing guidelines for diagnosis and blood safety, opt-out and universal testing strategies, drug resistance mechanisms and future vaccine candidates against HIV. The pattern of OIs and the treatment protocols also differ from country to country and region to region. Most of these issues will be discussed during this unique conference on first two days. Beside HIV/AIDS opportunistic infections are also major cause of mortality and morbidity in organ transplant recipients, including the bone-marrow and stem cell recipients and also in all solid organ transplants. Therefore, we have given a full day for scientific deliberations on opportunistic pathogens in organ transplants and those who have congenital immune-deficiencies.

Micromon Recombinant DNA Techniques Course

Micromon, in the School of Biomedical Sciences, is now seeking enquiries and applications for its next recombinant DNA techniques course that provides a comprehensive and fundamental training in the essential skills of "recombinant DNA technology". Highly regarded throughout the industry and by former participants, this outstanding and established course has attracted applicants from diverse backgrounds in private, government, scientific, clinical, educational and commercial organisations. It is an extremely intensive and demanding week-long course, designed to teach the essential skills to participants from all scientific disciplines, who have had little or no previous experience in molecular biology. It is also an ideal workshop for those who would like to consolidate their current, basic-intermediate, skill level. Entry requirements include a tertiary level qualification in science, medicine or related discipline and/or extensive practical laboratory experience. The course consists of approximately 10 hours of theory provided by a group of experienced lecturers who are all active researchers, experts in their relevant fields and are widely published. The practical training involves more than 30 hours of experimental laboratory work and tutorials. This is provided by graduate instructors who routinely use the applications and procedures in an active research environment. The key feature of the workshop is our tutor to participant ratio which is one to four for all workshop sessions and tutorials. A comprehensive manual with all lecture slides, protocols, procedures and references is provided.

14th Bangkok International Symposium on HIV Medicine

This annual International Workshop on HIV & Hepatitis Co-infection has become recognized as the leading medical gathering for those involved in the clinical care of individuals living with HIV and Hepatitis. 6th International Workshop on Hepatitis C, Resistance and New Compounds

Over the years, this workshop has become the leading event on Hepatitis C resistance. Scientists from both academia and industry have attended the conference in increasing numbers, attracted by the high level of science and the closed nature of the workshop that encourages participants to share their knowledge and latest findings. The International Workshop on Hepatitis C, Resistance & New Compounds provides a platform for scientific presentations and discussions for those interested in the area of antiviral drug development and antiviral drug resistance. We bring together scientists representing different disciplines (chemistry, virology, hepatology, immunology, infectious disease) to facilitate cross-discipline interaction and debate. 6th International Workshop on HIV Transmission

Over the years, advances in HIV treatment have led to an enhanced understanding of the virus and improved care of HIV infected patients. However our insights into the spread of the HIV virus remain limited. A more extensive exchange of knowledge on the various aspects of HIV transmission provides important perspectives for a better approach to the epidemic. For this purpose, an integrated forum was set up in 2006 to reveal perspectives of experts from different fields enabling discussion on all relevant mechanisms of HIV transmission. The annual Transmission Workshops have since continued to prove themselves valuable to those specialized (or specializing) in HIV transmission. The main objectives of this meeting are to provide a forum for basic scientists, clinicians, virologists, epidemiologists and public health officials to present and to discuss the various aspects of the transmission of HIV. The ultimate goal of the meeting is the integration of efforts from all relevant disciplines in order to constrain the spread of (drug-resistant) HIV.

6th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention

The International AIDS Society (IAS) today announced the selection of Rome, Italy as host of the world's largest open scientific conference on HIV/AIDS – the 6th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (IAS 2011) – to be held from 17 - 20 July 2011 at the Auditorium Parco della Musica. The event will be organized by the IAS, in partnership with Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italian National Institute of Health), which is the leading technical and scientific body of the Italian National Health Service. Held every two years, the IAS conference attracts over 5,000 participants from all over the world. It is a unique opportunity for the world's leading scientists, clinicians, public health experts and community leaders to examine the latest developments in HIV-related research, and to explore how scientific advances can be translated quickly into effective interventions to prevent and treat HIV, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.
The International AIDS Society (IAS) is the world's leading independent association of HIV professionals, with over 13,000 members in 188 countries working at all levels of the global response to HIV/AIDS.
