John graduated from La Trobe University after receiving a Bachelor of Science, Honours, in 1982. He then went on to obtain his PhD in Genetics from La Trobe University in 1990 while working at the Victorian Institute of Marine Sciences as a Research Assistant between 1987 and 1989. Between 1990 and 1994, he was an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Genetics at Monash. Becoming interested in the field of computers and computer science, John completed a Graduate Diploma in Computer Science from Monash University in 1994, the same year he joined the NRL. John is in charge of all aspects of the NRL's computer system and has written programs used exclusively by the NRL. He is responsible for information management as well as systems administration.

In his spare time, John enjoys gardening, movies and walking his dalmatians.
