Stirling graduated from the University of Tasmania in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Microbiology and Biochemistry.
He began his scientific career with Diagnostic Services in Hobart, working in the Bacteriology department. With an interest in overseas travel and work, Stirling spent eight years working at various hospital laboratories in the UK, gaining knowledge in the areas of Serology, Virology and Bacteriology. He also spent time working with the UK's Health Protection Agency's Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory and the Specialist Virology Unit.
Stirling joined the NRL in 2007, working within the Tertiary Reference Testing team.
Stirling enjoys sailing, travel and camping.
