Mark completed a Bachelor of Applied Science, majoring in Biochemistry, at Swinburne University in 1994. In 2006 he completed a PhD at the University of Melbourne, having investigated the design and structural characterization of peptide analogues of a sea anemone toxin, ShK, which had shown promise for the development of novel immunosuppressant compounds. He has since undertaken research in the field of proteomics at the Baker Medical Research Institute in Prahran, followed by the CSIRO Australian Animal Health Laboratory at Geelong.

Mark joined the NRL in 2008 as a member of the Evaluations Team.
