Kim graduated from the Queensland University of Technology with a B. App. Sc. (Medical Laboratory Science) in 1986. She went on to work for two
Australian based biotechnology companies, Agen Biomedical Ltd. and Qlone Ltd, where she was involved in the development of rapid immunodiagnostic tests. In 1988 she commenced work in Melbourne at St. Vincent's Institute of Medical Research where she undertook a Ph.D. developing a red cell agglutination assay which resulted in the commercialisation of a rapid diagnostic test for the detection of antibodies to HIV-1 in humans and a similar test for FIV in cats.

Kim joined the NRL in October 2000 as part of a research team aimed at developing improved diagnostic assays for monitoring HIV-1 infection.
